About Us | Kahului Carpet & Drapery | Maui Since 1973
Our Story · Maui Since 1973

Built on Maui.
Rooted in aloha.

Mel Pomroy started this company with his own hands in January 1973. His daughter Michele is Vice President today. His granddaughter Auchele works alongside her. Three generations — same values.

Meet Your Guide — Our Story

A young man, an island, and a promise.

Mel Pomroy was 25 when he flew over from Oahu and landed on Maui in 1971. Cane fields from the mountains to the harbor. Trade winds off the channel. A small community where a handshake still meant something. He fell hard for the Valley Isle and never left. Two years later, in January 1973, he opened Kahului Carpet & Drapery. Built it by hand — one job, one handshake at a time. Pride. Service. Aloha.

Fifty years of Maui homes, hotels, schools, and government buildings. His daughter Michele Pomroy Fraser is Vice President. She grew up in this business and runs it the same way her father did: pick up the phone, show up on time, do the work right. Michele's daughter Auchele works in admin. Three generations of the same family — still at it.

Today the company is licensed across every Hawaiian island, operating under DBA Olona Building Solutions. Flooring and window coverings on O'ahu, Maui, Hawai'i Island, Kaua'i, Moloka'i, and Lāna'i. The showroom is in the Old Kahului Shopping Center — a place the Pomroy family has deep roots in. Some things don't need to change.

Classic Maui

Remembering where we come from.

Kahului Carpet & Drapery grew up alongside Maui. Here's a little of what we remember.

Old Kahului Shopping Center — historic heart of Central Maui

The Old Kahului Shopping Center

Long before Kahului Carpet & Drapery moved here, the Pomroy family already had roots in this place. Ah Fook's Supermarket — a Kahului institution founded by Chinese immigrant Tam Ah Fook — had anchored the center for generations. By the time the company moved in, it felt less like arriving and more like coming home.

Maui sugarcane fields — HC&S plantation era, circa 1960s

The Cane Fields & A Young Man's Maui

In 1971, Mel stepped off a plane from Oahu into plantation Maui. The HC&S cane fields ran from the mountains to the harbor. Kahului was small and tight-knit — everybody knew everybody, and a handshake meant something. Mel felt it the moment he arrived. He never left.

Kahului Railroad — the lifeline of plantation-era Maui

The Kahului Railroad & The Spirit of Hard Work

The Kahului Railroad hauled sugarcane from the fields to the harbor for decades — the lifeblood of plantation Maui. By 1973, it was already history. But the work ethic it carried wasn't. Show up. Do the work. Take care of your neighbors. That's the same ethic Mel brought to every floor he ever laid — and that we still bring today.

January 1973 — Kahului Carpet & Drapery opens its doors

January 1973 — A Promise Made

January 1973. Mel opened with a simple promise: do good work, treat people right, bring aloha to every job. Maui was growing fast — new homes going up across Central Maui, young families putting down roots. And Mel was right there, down on his hands and knees, making sure their floors were something to be proud of. Fifty years later, that's still the promise.
