Wide Plank vs. Narrow Plank Hardwood: Which Fits Your Home?

Wide plank wood-look flooring in a bright Maui living room

Plank width is one of those details that seems minor until you see the difference in person — it genuinely changes both the character of a room and how the flooring goes in.

Wide Plank

Wide plank flooring makes a room feel more spacious and modern, with fewer seams drawing the eye across the floor. It tends to show natural wood grain and character more dramatically, though it can be more sensitive to humidity-driven expansion given the larger surface area per board.

Narrow Plank

Narrow plank has a more traditional, classic look and, thanks to its smaller size, tends to handle humidity swings a bit more predictably than very wide boards — a real consideration in our climate. Neither is objectively better; it comes down to the style you're going for and the specific room's exposure to humidity and light, which we're always happy to walk through with you before you commit.
