Why Maui's Humidity Should Shape Your Flooring Choice
July 19, 2026
Maui's average humidity sits around 81%, and that's not just a comfort factor — it's a major consideration when choosing flooring. Materials that perform beautifully on the mainland can behave very differently once they're living in island air day after day.
What Humidity Actually Does to Flooring
Consistent moisture in the air affects how materials expand, contract, and hold up over years of use. Solid hardwood, for example, is more sensitive to humidity swings than engineered wood or laminate, which is why we talk through expectations carefully before recommending it for a given room. Flooring that's rated for wet or humid environments simply has an easier time here.
What Tends to Perform Well on Maui
Luxury vinyl plank, engineered hardwood, and quality laminate are generally better suited to consistent island humidity than solid hardwood, especially in rooms near a lanai or with less climate control. Carpet still works well in interior rooms with normal airflow. The right answer really depends on the specific room, its exposure, and how it's used day to day — which is why we walk every space individually rather than offering a one-size-fits-all recommendation.
