What the Wear Layer Number on LVP Actually Means

Every LVP carton prints a wear-layer thickness in mils. That top film is what takes sand, chairs, and dog nails. It is not the same thing as how thick the plank feels underfoot.

A simple way to think about it

Light bedrooms can live with a thinner wear layer. Kitchens, entries, and rentals want more. We would rather spec a 20 mil plank in a Kihei condo hallway than a pretty 6 mil that looks tired after one visitor season.

Thickness of the plank is a different question

A thick core helps the floor feel solid and hide a slightly uneven slab. The wear layer is the skin. Ask for both numbers. We'll walk you through them in the showroom - no square-foot rates shouted across the room.
