Matte vs. Glossy: Choosing a Flooring Finish
July 6, 2026
Sheen level is one of the most overlooked decisions in choosing a floor, and it changes the look, the maintenance, and even the safety of a room more than most people expect.
Matte and Low-Sheen Finishes
Matte finishes hide scratches, dust, and everyday footprints far better than glossy ones, and they tend to give a room a more relaxed, natural feel — a good match for Maui's easygoing, indoor-outdoor living style. They're also generally less slippery, an underrated safety consideration.
Glossy Finishes
Glossy floors have real visual impact — reflecting light and reading as more formal or dramatic — but they show every scuff, dust particle, and footprint, and can be genuinely slippery when wet. For most everyday Maui living spaces, we lean toward recommending matte or satin finishes, saving high-gloss for smaller, lower-traffic accent areas where the drama pays off without the upkeep headache.
