Choosing the Right Grout Color for Your Tile Floor
July 14, 2026
Grout color is one of the smallest decisions in a tile project and one of the most visually powerful — it can make a floor look seamless or make every single tile edge stand out, depending on the choice.
Matching vs. Contrasting
Grout close in color to the tile creates a clean, seamless look that makes a room feel larger and more unified — a popular choice for smaller bathrooms or open floor plans. Contrasting grout, on the other hand, highlights the tile pattern itself, which can look striking with geometric or handmade-style tile but shows dirt and staining more visibly over time.
Practical Considerations
Lighter grout is more prone to visible staining in high-traffic or high-moisture areas, while darker grout hides grime better but can look heavy in a small space. Sealing grout properly at installation — and periodically after — matters more than color choice for long-term appearance, but we always help homeowners weigh both look and long-term upkeep before deciding.
