Flooring Underlayment Basics: The Layer You Don't See
June 10, 2026
It's the layer nobody sees once the project is done, but underlayment does a surprising amount of quiet work beneath your new flooring — and it's worth understanding before your next project.
What Underlayment Actually Does
Underlayment smooths out small subfloor imperfections, adds a layer of moisture protection, and in many cases reduces the hollow sound that can come with certain flooring types installed directly over a hard subfloor. The right underlayment depends heavily on the flooring going on top of it — LVP, laminate, and hardwood each have their own recommended approach.
Why We Don't Skip This Step
It can be tempting to see underlayment as an unnecessary add-on cost, but skipping it or using the wrong type is one of the most common reasons a flooring installation underperforms over time. It's a small part of the overall project, but it's exactly the kind of detail our own trained crew never cuts corners on — because we want the floor looking and feeling right for years, not just on install day.
