Stairs take more abuse than almost any other surface in a home — every step is a small impact, and that adds up fast. Choosing the right flooring for stairs deserves more thought than it usually gets.

Safety Comes First

Slip resistance matters more on stairs than anywhere else in the house, which is why we steer people away from high-gloss finishes on stair treads regardless of the material chosen. Textured LVP, low-pile carpet runners, or a wood finish with added grip all perform better underfoot than a smooth, glossy surface.

Durability Where It Counts Most

Stair nosings — the front edge of each step — wear faster than flat flooring because that's where feet make contact first on the way down. Reinforced nosing profiles and durable materials at that specific point make a real difference in how long a staircase holds up.
