Engineered hardwood confuses a lot of people because it looks just like solid hardwood — and that's exactly the point. But underneath that top layer, it's built quite differently, and understanding that difference matters for a humid climate like ours.

How It's Actually Built

Engineered hardwood has a real hardwood veneer on top, bonded to layers of plywood or high-density fiberboard underneath, arranged in a cross-grain pattern. That layered construction makes it more dimensionally stable than solid hardwood, meaning it resists the expansion and contraction that comes with Maui's humidity swings noticeably better.

What That Means for You

You get the genuine look and feel of real wood, with better real-world performance in a place like Hawaii — though it can typically only be refinished a limited number of times, depending on how thick that top veneer layer is. For most island homes wanting a true hardwood look without the humidity headaches, it's the option we point people toward first.
