Can New Flooring Go Over Your Existing Floor?

It's one of the first questions almost every homeowner asks: can we just put the new floor over what's already there? Sometimes yes, sometimes no — and it genuinely depends on the specifics of your home.

When It Can Work

LVP and laminate can often be installed over existing tile, vinyl, or even hardwood, as long as that surface is flat, stable, and in reasonably good condition. This can save time and tear-out cost, which is always welcome news for a homeowner.

When It Can't

If the existing floor is uneven, has moisture problems underneath, or is carpet (which isn't a suitable base for anything), a full removal is usually the right call — installing over a bad foundation just means covering up a problem rather than solving it. We'll always tell you honestly which situation you're in rather than talk you into the easier-sounding option if it's not actually the right one.
